Web site Hosting

What are the steps necessary for hosting a Web site? what type of HW, SW are needed for setup? any ideas of good hosting vendors? Do I need to spend a lot of money for this?

I would like to host my own site and later host other sites. But I don’tknow where to start. I would really appreciate any help.
