My programmer,Linux lover, boss removed and reformatted the operations master b4 the FSMO role was seized. He decided to change our domain name. I know I have to start over, but how do I go about it? He’s created a new domain “windows.—.com” where our domain was “—.com”. You can see it in network neighborhood and ping it but when I try to join a pc to the domain I get “domain does not exist or is not available. We HAD 2 active servers (W2k) in the old domain, until today when they both locked up after pressing the start button. I’m pretty sure AD is locked up because of inconsistancies. The application log is full but I can’t get to it to clear it.
Should I just start fresh with the new domain and take the old servers offline then reformat and join the new domain? We started with a workgroup, do I need to return all pc’s to that first? I only hold an MCSE in NT4.0, so I’m struggling with W2k and we’ve only got 1 NT 4.0 server. Is there a book on single domains or just troubleshooting single domains? My boss seems to believe the rules for deployment don’t apply to our case.
Here’s the main question: Can I take the old servers offline, reformat, and pretend none of this ever happened, or am I missing an easier set of steps? If so what are those steps?
