Where areas of IT will have the most job growth in years to come?

by itnewb . Updated 14 years, 8 months ago

I’m considering a career switch from architecture into IT, and going back to school to do so. I’ve been doing some research on the current state of the profession, as well as the outlook for growth in each area. What I’m finding is confusing. Some say IT jobs are very hard to find right now, yet some sources (such as BLS) claim the IT fields will experience faster than average growth between now and 2018.

So I was hoping some people here currently in the industry could shed some light on what is really going on out there. Are there certain areas of IT that look to be more stable toward the latter years of this decade? Is outsourcing as big of a threat to the IT jobs in the U.S. as some claim?

I’d really appreciate any honest advice. And if anyone knows of any other IT forums where I could post this same question, I’d appreciate it.
