Which is better? Joins or subquerys?

I am trying to create some stored procedures for a multi-user environment and I was trying to decide on the best/most efficient option for retrieving data. I?ve researched at length the pros and cons of QUERYS and JOINS, but I would rather seek advice first.

What cases are better for either?
