Win XP messenger ghost?

In windows XP. On start up microsoft messenger loads. When finished loading there are 2 messenger icons in the system tray one of which is white in colour. If the mouse is moved over the white one it disapears. I have noticed this on a number of machines. can anyone help me with an explanation.
