Windows Remote Desktop

Hi,
I’m an IT assistant and we’re needing to setup remote access to the 20 or so office computers in our offices. It will be mainly for troubleshooting and repairs that can be taken care of when no IT personnel are physically nearby. Because of our routers and the hassle of rerouting ports. Would I be wrong to assume that it’s be easier if we used a VPN connection to access our IT Office computers and from there use Remote Desktop to navigate within the Local network? Let me know if I’m wrong in this assumption and if there’s a technique much simpler or more efficient out there. Thank you.
