Windows Updates

I formatted my computer on sunday and reinstalled windows successfully – however i haven’t been able to use windows update since i attempted to install windows defender. Symptoms are internet explorer 7 comes up with an error message that it has to close. Im wondering what i have to do to fix this issue as i really want to install windows internet explorer 7 again as i like it better than IE 6. Any help would be appreciated.
