Windowsxp Versus x1600 Pro

I have an XP machine and have just tried to install the drivers for ATI X1600 pro graphics card.

The machine encountered a fatal error and closed windows

It will not restart and when I try to start in safe mode it says that the driver folder is corrupt…any clues anybody ?
