Anyone come across this before and can maybe offer me an answer before I reinstall windows (XP Pro)?
I was called out to sort out a pc that was infected with a virus last week and also set up a wireless router. I set up a Belkin F5D7630-4A modem router and everything seemed to be ok. Router was setup ok and using my own laptop I was able to browse the Net via wireless.
Then I plugged in the infected pc and that’s where things started to go majorly wrong. All of a sudden the lights on the Belkin started flashing alternately and I wasn’t able to get the web with the laptop. The virus on the pc attacked the router and ultimately wiped the firmware before I was able to do anything about it. To be fair to Belkin they have asked for the router to be returned in exchange for a new one (even though I bought it used) as they are interested to find out what attacked the router. It turned out that there were just under 4300 viruses on the machine!! That pc was eventually reformatted and reinstalled and – as far as I know – is ok now.
However, my laptop isn’t.
Although it runs ok, it will not connect to my wireless router at home. It just will not get an ip address. If I specify the ip in the network properties, it will connect to the router but it will not connect to the net even though other pcs on my home network connect without a problem. It will get on the net using ethernet but I’m concerned that my other pcs will get infected so I block all traffic to the other pcs when the laptop is connected. I’m on the point of reformatting and reinstalling but I thought I ask here in case someone can come up with an easier solution. Needless to say a full AV scan (using Kaspersky) brings up nothing and a full system scan using Spyware Doctor draws a blank too. Any suggestions anyone?
