Word 97 Document formatting lost

Having successfully saved a formatted document e.g. underlining, italics and centred a subsequent open of the document loses this formatting. Furthermore amended text is appended to the document as though it is soem sort of recovery mode of open.
A subsequent open of the document from Start, Documents semms to work OK. Office 97 SR1 has already been applied.
