Word Doc in Microsoft Office Word 97-2003

Whenever I open a word doc, the header/footer page numbers are hightlighted and it display PAGE and my hyperlinks are also highlighted and I have to toggle them to dispaly (i.e. if I paste a photo from the internet). Same thing happens with my table of contents, I have to toggle each line to have the page number display. If anyone can assist.
