I am setting up a small network for a client consisting of 10 XP Pro
workstations served by a box running Windows 2003 Server R2. I
have not promoted the server yet (installed active directory, DNS,
DHCP, etc). –It will be a domain controller when completed. When I
do promote the server, I need to give remote access to a software
tech so he can “hand-load” the client’s application on all of the
workstations. It would be optimal if I could get the network running
in my lab and all software installed/kinks ironed out, before I deliver
the machines to my client.
My problem is that my ISP gives only 1 IP address to us. Is there a
way to promote the new server and get that domain going while
connecting to the internet through the same router my own network
(2000 server domain controller) resides on? This is not an upgrade
and I do not want the two domains to comingle or to even know
about each other.
I could just use another router to get the lab network going and have
my network be essentially “unplugged”, but we are fairly internet
dependent ourselves and the software tech may need a couple of
days to get his end done.
