I have 1 W2k, and 1 W98 PC, attached to each other, and the internet via Linksys router (BEFSR41). I have installed all available updates for each system.
This is a peer to peer network. Both see each other (by name and ip addr.) and the internet. Name resolution between peers is handled through the hosts file. The router hands out ip addresses (DHCP), but I have also tried a static IP on the 98 system.
W2k can access W98, but going the other way “\\w2k\share”, I am continually promptedfor a password. If I try to browse to w2k I’m prompted for a password to the “\\w2k\IPC$” share. I have tried all shares, including the admin “C$”.
I’ve scanned numerous on-line forums, and Technet, and tried a dozen suggestions. Creating a local account on w2k to match the default login ID on the 98 system, enabling the guest acount in w2k, and all different configurations of share permissions on the 2000 system, to no avail.
The only wildcard is the use of ZoneAlert firewall on the w2k system, but the behavior continues when the firewall is shut down. I wouldn’t think this an issue, the firewall shouldn’t allow ANY access to the w2k system, rather it would be completely hidden if doing it’s job correctly, and the symptoms are thesame; firewall up, or down.
Are you familiar with this, and have any sugestions on how to resolve?
Thanks in advance.
