A compatible buy or not?

I need your expert opinion on a CD burner. I’ve got my gateway desktop computer, Pentium 3, 400 mhz, 64mb RAM, running Windows 98SE, IE 5.5, and unfortunately a slow modem/dial-up connection. Should be 56K, but It’s never that fast. I defrag every week? Anyway, I also have a Gateway Solo 5300 Laptop, Pentium 3, CD/DVD capable, running Millenium Edition and IE 5.5-6, but at least 5. I’d like to start burning my own CD’s. Also, DVD’s, but don’t know a darn thing about the equipment. Is this a good buy or do you know of something better?
