Access (97) Front End With SQL

by bob sellman . Updated 23 years, 7 months ago

I’ve been developing with Access (mainly 97) for a few years now and have been starting to convert and upgrade applications to use SQL Server for the back end database. I’ve had some pretty good success so far and proven it works well.

I will beassisting other developers in the company (who have been primarily working on mainframe applications) to start doing some of their development using the Access/SQL combination.

I know how I’ve done this process and what my ideas are. I’d like tohear from others who develop applications that use the Access/SQL combination, with Access as the front end. What problems have you encountered? Any suggestions to make it work better? How do you develop an app (i.e., do you do it all in Access, then move to the SQL back end, or use MSDE as back end, or go right to a SQL back end)? If you use MSDE for the development back end, do you use it on a server or just locally and how well does it work and how many conversion problems have you encountered when going to SQL?
