Access 97/Word 97 files hang 5.1 server

I have a Netware 5.1 server latest with the latest service pack installed. NT 4.0 workstations with latest service packs applied, running client 32 for NT 4.81e. After installing the latest client on the workstations, a problem with Access 97 and Word 97 began, where occasionaly a file will hang on the server. The only way to release the file is to down the server. Has anyone else had this happen and how is it fixed?
