Active Dir can’t manage clients

I just built a Windows 2000 Server for learning purposes. I have 2 network cards, one is connected to the cable modem and the other has a static IP address for the home network. I installed AD. I am now able to join the client to my network but whenI try to click on the client machine in AD users and computers and try to manage them I get a message that says that the client cannot be managed because it cannot fdind the path. I can see the server from the client machine. I don’t know if I installed DNS correctly or not. I need step by step instruction on setting up DNS and AD. Please help.
