I have recently moved into a brand new home which has been completely pre-wired for cable & networking. Each room in the house has both a coax AND RJ-45 jack. I had Comcast install Cable and Internet. They only added the internet to my one computer going from the coax jack in the room, to the Cable modem and then to my PC.
Every room in the house is now live on the cable/coax jacks but none of the data ports are live. I called Comcast and they want $150 for installation as well as $2 a month. I know that’s not a lot of money, but with the house already wired, it seems I should be able to do this myself.
There is a cabling panel for the house with the following: Multi-Jack Coax Block with 8 coax ports of which 7 are occupied, 2 Ethernet Hubs, and a Network Patch Panel (RJ-45), wired to each room.
This is what I’m thinking…
1. Move the Cable modem to this panel and patch it to the coax block.
2. Add a network switch (100mbs)
3. Patch the modem to the switch
4. Patch any room I want live from the Patch Panel to the switch.
I’m thinking this would do the trick.
Am I forgetting something?
Does this Coax block work like any other patch block?
