Well I have a small 5 station lab, all Windows 7 64bit. My print server is an old XP 32bit machine. I had this all setup and working with with a laserjet 1018 printer. But it died and i replaced it with a Laserjet P2015. I have to set it up this way because we use print credit software that has to have a print server.
So i use the addglobalprinterremotely.cmd to set up the printer for all users because we are on a domain. It goes through the process fine but the printer never shows up in Devices and Printers. And when I browse to it in the Network, I double click on it the printer and after about 3 min it fails and says cannot find a driver. So i says click “ok” to browse for a driver and i point it to the driver i downloaded from hp and it says no compatible driver found then it just quits.
I am able to “add a printer” “add a local printer” “create new port” “local port” then type in the network address of the printer \\computer\printer and it will install the drivers and work.
I am thinking it has something to do with windows don’t have a driver for it and thus can’t communicate with the printer when trying to use the global command. It worked before on the old printer because windows had one for it. But i don’t know for sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
