After spending several hours working through a stop error (the infamous 218 where the hive wouldn’t load) I decided I’d check out mirroring the operating system part of the disk.
Setup is W2K server sP4 on a Proliant ml350 G3. It has a hardware raid controller not being used.
There are 4-18gb and 1-36gb hot swap disks installed.
The 36gb is installed but with nothing on it and I have another 18gb still in the wrapper.
This is our Domain Controller using active Directory.
Currently have the oS and a parts lookup program on o/s drive. The others are used for data storage for the our Partslookup program and just general storage for service data (mostly pdf’s)some video from our manufacturers.
Our business system with its data are on a member server of the domain.
I have seen both hardware and the W2K server software Raids discussed here.
Should I tackle configuring the hardware raid controller to a raid 1 or raid 5? Or just Ghost the O/S to another drive to setup a mirror. The most important part of this server is its role as a domain server.
All the parts lookup sofware data comes in on cd’s and is easily reloaded.
I’m trying having to tear this all down just to get some redundancy for the o/S.
Sorry for long post and I appreciate any input or suggestions.
