Application W2K server

One of our customers uses a WAN.Our software uses a server on this and is a standalone application server. We need to disconnect the server and clients from their WAN to allow us to convert our software.( We will do this @ our offices) We need to beable to authenticate the clients on the application server rather than the DC on the WAN. Can we upgrade the application server to a DC?
