Archive Bit in 2k server

I have an old DOS accounting program that I have put on a 2k Server. The problem I have is that when the archive bit is set the program can not read the data files.I have unchecke all the archiving feature in the folder and when I do a back up I have set Veratis Backup to copy with out the bit. The bit shows up anyway. What am i missing???
