Are these file types the real file types?

There are mp3 files that a client is paying me to upload and organize on their XP machine. There are several folders full of mp3 files that are not recognized as audio or (or even video). WMP screams wrong file type, VLC won’t even give an error message, and windows media classic brings the following as its error message:

C:\Documents and Settings\Delta Bravo\My Documents\The Eminem Show\01_Curtains_Up.MP3::Output

Notice that the file is listed as filename.mp3. I assumed that the file may have really been an mpeg1 file just renamed to assume an mp3 role (if that even makes sense). I attempted to use a batch editor and the batch editor wouldnt acknowledge files as audio of any type (the reason i assumed video) I am completely at a loss and I rely on you, my technical brethren to shine some light for me.
