AUTHENTICATION METHODS!!! Windows 2003

How does authentication work in Windows 2003 server? Do you need IPsec? Ive read that for authentication, IPsec allows you to use Kerberos V5 protocol and certification authority (CA). Im a newbie to this, so how does this work in a windows 2003 network environment. Is authentication needed?
