automatic updates

This last round of updates has caused big problems with our computer.
My wife rebooted after the download and it froze up.She could not even get into safe mode.She did a repair on it first, then The only way in was in safe mode, and she started uninstalling programs to find a conflict, AVG,yahoo, MSN,My space,ect,The task manager said it was running at 94% at this stage
When she uninstalled Secunia the little icon came up saying installing programs. Then it came right.
I have just got home and took the updates again [after setting notify me] and it seems ok.
While I was away 3 of my mates have had notification that their puters have frozen at home. Is this something that other people have had happen this round
