backups to another hard drive?

Recently, I have been backing up to another hard drive with periodic backups to tapes for archive. I do this so I don’t have to have someone in remote locations handling tapes everyday and to keep from buying tapes. This seems to be working o.k. for now, but can anyone tell me if there’s a serious flaw in this strategy? I always hear so much about tape being the best way.
