Best router for port forwarding?

by jonhunt2 . Updated 20 years, 12 months ago

Hello all:

I have a client who has a simple one-server environment. Users are generally mobile and connect in the office and outside the office. They currently use Exchange server for their email with an Actiontec DSL Gateway (provided by Qwest) which I have configured to forward ports 25 (and others for VPN and RPC over HTTP) to the server.

Every other day or so, if connections are not working, they reboot the Actiontec and that seems to help, but we shouldn’t have to reboot that often. Since the server is performing VPN end point, I just need VPN pass-through port forwarding. What’s a good, reliable, and cost-effective router/firewall that we could use? Would Linksys or NetGear work OK or are they in the same class as the Actiontec? (We’ll still use the Actiontec, but we’ll turn off NAT and just use it in bridge mode. We have 5 static IPs available.)

Thanks,
Jon
