Best server for a small business + remote login?

by techasaurus . Updated 17 years, 9 months ago

A small client of mine asked a question, since I’m the “tech wiz” – so here it goes…

They have an office of 4-5 computers that they want networked to a local server where files will be stored and accessed such as Quickbooks for keeping business expenses and paperwork up to date daily.

One of their employee’s works from home, and wants to be able to access the server from home, update Quickbooks and access other files and documents, and then the employees in the office can see the updates in either real time OR as soon as she logs out of the server.

From the sounds of it, they pretty much just want a central location for files (photos, documents, quickbooks, etc…)

What would be the best server to handle this? I’m looking at a setup with at least 2 hard drives (one as a backup).

Requirements:
– Must be able to work with Mac and Windows computers (boss uses a MAC OS X, everyone else Windows XP or Vista)
– Must allow employee from home to login to server and access content on server.
– Must be able to login from home with the only internet access as Windstream DSL (with a dedicated IP).

Thanks guys for the help, I’m not a server guru, but I do plan on taking classes starting Spring 2009!
