Bi Directional USB Printer

I am installing a LexMark x73 on a system with Windows XP. The scanner is working fine, but the printer is not working. An error comes up that the printer is not working. The computer is an new Dell 4500S and the cable is a USB device cable. Does anyone have any suggestions to fix it? I appreciate any help.
