Bios cannot recognize 40 gig hard drive

I am running a Shuttle “hot-591p” mobo, 450 k6 AMD, and a 10 gig Western Digital HD.Bios are Award v4.51pg.
Tried to up grade to a 40 gig Western Digital WD400 HD.
The bios could not configure to it. Can it be done? Or should I build a new systemworthy of this hard drive?
