Black screen after Windows logo

Immediate after the Window logo in Windows Xp Professional SP2, I’m getting a black screen. It does the same in Safe mode and after the first part of a repair install where it reboots. I can get to the user id screen in VGA mode but then the keyboard and mouse won’t work. So I can’t click anything. What else can I try?

Postscript: I tried the “Enable VGA mode” again after the first part of the repair install, and now the setup is continuing…in VGA mode..it was just black in the normal mode. So after the repair install I’ll see if it normal mode works.
