BOOTING FROM A TOSHIBA XP CD RECOVERY

I am booting my computer from my xp recovery cd for toshiba. My aim is to restore back some settings of the computer I have lost but all the option I am given are only for reinstaling the whole system. What I dont want, because I cant afford loosing all my works and programms on the computer. Any help please!!!!
