Broadband and dialup connection

I am using OS9 and have a cable connection to the internet. I also have an internal modem in my iMac. Now I need to gain remote access to data through dialup connection. Apparently I can’t do it because I have a cable connection. Is there a way out short of yanking the cable connection from the usb port?
