Butt coverage for poor back-up system?

by sb-it . Updated 20 years, 5 months ago

I posting in hopes of getting some suggestions to cover my butt in case of a back-up crisis. Here’s the siuation:

I’m working part-time as a network admin at a small company. Being in IT I’m natually paraniod about all the things that can wrong. The company hasn’t had a dedicated IT person before me and it’s a stuggle to convince them to spend money to get our system up to “best-practices” levels. They currently use external hard drives and make full back-ups every day, for about three days, and then start the cycle over again. I am pushing for a tape back-up system so we can archive back-ups and get on a longer rotation cycle.

Here’s my question:

They have offered me a full-time position and I would like to get them to sign something stating that I recomend a more robust back-up solution and that, in my professional judgement, they are using a very risky system now. The company does engineering work and if the data is permantly lost the company will be out of business. Needless to say, as the IT guy it would look terrible for me if the company I worked for went out of business because there was not an adequate back-up and recovery system. I could see that affecting my career. Does anyone have a suggestion for a document I can get them to sign that would cover my butt?

Thanks!
