Can a UTP cable burn a Ethernet port?

by stoh . Updated 25 years, 3 months ago

Here’s the scenario.
I have a Cable Modem, a CAT5 UTP cable “punched” into a CAT5 RJ45 connector and a built-in Ethernet NIC connecting for broadband speed.

All went fine till recently, I found out there was no connection between my NIC and Cable Modem. No. the UTP cable was not faulty. To my surprise, I discovered that the Ethernet port jumpers and C95 (vicinity) were burnt! No other burnt marks were observed.

I changed the Ethernet port and the problem was solved.

I just want to know what caused my built-in Ethernet port to be burned? Was it that harmless-looking UTP cable? Or was there other contributing factors?

I would appreciate if someone will find the “culprit” for this “mystery” case.
Thank you so much.
