Can Excel sit server-side?

I’ve been asked to develop a financial model using Excel 2003/VB.NET

Is there a way the model can be structured such that the Excel calculation components sit server-side and the results can be displayed on the users desktop using Excel?

There is a massive amount of data that must be analysed and my suggestion of using SQL has been rejected.
