Can I change a windows server 2000 mode while users are connected?

The 2000 server is a domain controller, I also have a windows server 2003 as a member server in the domain. This server is an sql server. I have workstations running Win 2000, XP and Vista. I want to add a new server which will be a windows 2008 server. Eventually the 2008 server will become the domain controller.
The 2000 server is currently in operation in a live environment and will continue to be the domain controller for the next month. However, I want to start configuring the 2008 server. I have already prepared the forest on the 2000 server. However, in order for me to prepare the 2000 domain I have to change it from mixed mode to active mode. How will this affect my current network stability as the 2000 server is still in commission in a live environment? Will I have interuptions or any adverse effects on the network?
