can i replace dvd rom on laptop

hey , my laptop quit burning dvds and cds……..i tried cleanin it and the laser……..no luck though…………can i buy a dvd rom to replace the old one……..i heard u could just replace the whole dvd burner with a new one for pretty cheap………is this true and if so can anyone recommend one that is cheap and would work……………………………..
