I recently upgraded to a new system. My old motherboard failed and it was time to upgrade anyway. However I wanted to use my old drive (Seagate Barracuda 7200). My new system has 2 DVD writers and a Western Digital 320GB hard drive. I can not access the old drive to format it. The drive is recognized in the bios but when I start XP it starts to load XP then the computer reboots. I tried to load safe mode and I get the same error. I then tried to use my upgrade XP disk to access and format the old drive and I get an error message to disable my virus checker and some other programs on the old drive, same thing happens if I try to Repair XP. There is no way I was able to access this drive. I tried to use my old Win98 CD to access the drive but both my CD-Roms are SATA and Win98 will not recognize them. I just want to format this drive for a backup drive. By the way my system was able to install XP on my new drive without a problem. But whenever the old drive was hooked up as a slave the rebooting problem returned. Any help would be appreciated.
