I’m unable to run an old DOS GW-Basic program (version 3.23) in Windows 98 on my new Compaq Deskpro EXS (PIII733, 128RAM, 10GB). Whenever I double click on the file “basic.com” to activate it, I get a “you can not shell to basic” error message. I’ve already tried the following remedies:
1) I used the dos shell in windows and it would not run. I rebooted to MS DOS as well. Neither worked.
1a) I booted to safe mode and it did not run.
2) I tweaked the autoexec.bat and config.sys to reflect the most basic DOS environment (with himem.sys and emmm386, NOEMS loaded). It did not work.
3) I have another machine running win98 that can successfully run basic.com: I took that image and cloned it over my new machine. It doesn’t work.4) I reloaded Win98 from scratch, after I formatted the HD. I also did this with Win98SE. No luck.
5) I have tried it by loading Win2000, NT workstation 4.0…no luck.
6) the only success I had was if I loaded the full version of DOS 6.22 andnothing else. Then I can run basic.com successfully. However, as soon as I installed Win98 on top of it, I lose its capability to run basic.com
I’m out of ideas. I desperately need to get this program to run in windows 98, or win2000. Please help
