Can someone tell me where to find information on how to use a VPN tunnel?

I’m using the Shrew Soft VPN client and have established a tunnel to a Netgear FVS318 but I can’t get Remote Desktop to connect. It may be that I don’t know which IP to use. The OS for all computers is Windows (Server 2003, Server 2008, XP, and Vista).
