Can you use a genericXP disk to restore a Compaq Presario 916US?

I am trying to help out the assist. manager at work. Her laptop is Compaq Presario 916US running Windows XP. There are so many things wrong with it that a system restore seems like the best way to fix it. However, she has no idea where her disks are. Can I use a multi user licensed XP disk to restore this or should we just order a new one from HP?
