Cannot access an Excel document (.xls)

I have an excel document which when i try to open, it comes up with an error ‘file may be read only,or you may be trying to access a read only location, or the server the document is stored may not be responding. I tried to open and repair file, even renamed file to (.xml,.doc etc) but it didnt open.

Does anyone have any suggestion on how to resolve this error?
