Cannot nslookup/ping netbios name or ip address of child DC

I set up a child domain, (child.parent.com) of parent domain, (parent.com). I followed the instructions to prep DNS on the parent domain DNS server and to prep DNS on the child server prior to dcpromoing the child server, (server2) to be a DC of the child domain.

From the parent domain controller the issue I have is that I can nslookup (child.parent.com) and it tells me the servers and IP addresses correctly. I can nslookup (server2.child.parent.com) and it tells me the servers and IP addresses correctly.

But I cannot nslookup the child server name itself (server2) or it’s IP address. I know I’m missing something but I’m not sure what to do.

I’ve tried a few things and they didn’t work. Does anybody have any ideas.
