cannot open excel files without saving them first

Using both outlook and my .com servers email (it doesn’t matter which) i can’t directly open excel files all of a sudden. I have to save the file first , then it opens fine. Also, this is only happening with excel files , not word or other types of attachments. Thanks for any help you can give me.
