Cannot remove printer in XP Pro

I have an issue with a remote client who cannot remove a printer from her printers and faxes. It seems as though there is still a phantom document in an old and long-since-removed printer, and none of the printers will delete. Also, when attempting to print a test page of a fresh install of that printer (manufacturer rhymes with HELL) all they get is a buttload of pages with one line of wingdings at the top. Any clues?
I am guessing that on Monday (client is gone for the weekend) I will start by stopping print spooler service, but has anyone else been effected by this issue?
