cannot telnet into router

I have obtained from work an old cisco 2500 series router, however I cannot telnet into it since trying the password recovery procedure, when I got a message that the baud rate is being changed as it rebooted, since then despite the speed that I tryto connect via telnet i get nothing apart from some times some spurious characters

Any suggestions would be gratefully recieved
