cant logon to domain after image restore

Server 2003 domain controller died. The only image we could get to work is 2 months old. Now all users get the following message when attempting to logon to the domain “Windows cannot connect to the domain, either because the domain controller is down or otherwise unavailable, or because your computer account was not found.”
The domain is up and pingable when logging into the pc locally. DC event viewer shows id 5722 “The session setup from the computer xyz failed to authenticate. The name of the account referenced in the security database is xyz$. The following error occured. Access is denied.:
