I have a Windows network with ten computers. Domain controller is Windows 2000 Server SP 4. Eight PCs are Windows XP SP 2, and two are Windows 2000 Pro.
I cannot ping the two Windows 2000 computers and have the same (maybe) problem with one of the Windows XP computers.
I can’t ping them, can’t access the admin share, can’t administer them remotely, can’t remote control these systems. But I know for a fact that they are turned on and connected to the network. Users can log in, print to network printers, ping the server, and access file shares.
If I reboot a Windows 2000 system into safe mode with networking, I can then ping it. But it is not running firewall software, the ICS firewall is disabled. And none of the services are interfering with network communication–because I turned each service off one at a time and that did not resolve the issue.
I haven’t looked into the problem with the Windows XP system yet.
Any thoughts on why I can’t communicate with these systems?
