can’t view message in reading pane in Outlook 2003

Outlook crashed. When I re-established my accounts and recovered messages using Inbox Repair Tools I immediately was not able to click on a message and view it in the Reading Pane. Message at the top of the reading pane “Item can not be viewed in Reading Pane. Item has not been received from server”. The only way I can view messages is to go to Tools, send/receive, mark to download a message. Back to Tools, send/receive and process marked messages. How can get Outlook to behave the way it did before?
